WELCOME BACK A very happy new year to you all. I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and are enjoying the holidays.

It’s going to be a fun packed and exciting first term and I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again and get back into dancing. Highlights for the term will be our Choreographic Competition in March, I will have more information shortly and will be able to tell you about our exciting judges for this year’s competition.

ENROLMENT DAY Term 1 classes run from Monday 2 February to Thursday 2 April. I will be holding 2 enrolment / uniform days on Wednesday 21st January 4pm – 6pm & Saturday 31st January 10am – 1pm at the studio. This is a good opportunity to pay term fees and purchase uniforms. Ballet shoes, socks, tap shoes, leotards, and skirts as well as the Jazz and Tap uniforms can be bought from the studio at good discounted prices.

2015 ENROLMENT To enrol for classes for 2015 you will need to complete the enrolment form with your details, this will assist with updating our contact records, students who are currently attending classes will not automatically be re-enrolled. A deposit of $20 per child per class is required to reserve your child’s place in your preferred class, please make payment to Expressions Dance account 12 3051 0410476 00 using your child’s name as a reference. Class numbers will be strictly kept to a maximum of 14 per class, currently we have a waiting list for classes so places will be allocated once the deposit and enrolment form have been received. The $20 deposit will be deducted off the term fees, and payment of the balance of term fees will be due by Saturday 31st January prior to the start of classes, an invoice will be emailed once the deposit and enrolment form have been received.

CONCERT I trust you enjoyed our end of year concert and thank you for your support in making this event happen, I believe it is a great opportunity for students to perform and demonstrate the skills they have acquired throughout the year. Children won some great prizes for their performances and we would like to encourage more children to enter this year. To enter this competition children will need to choreograph (make up) a dance using any style of dance. There will be three different sections for solo’s, duets and groups (3 or more children), each section is open to any age, minimum age for participants is 5 years (age will be taken into account during judging). There will be an entry fee and prizes and certificates will be given to participants. More information and entry forms will be handed out in class.

JAZZ LIMBERING CLASSES Jazz Limbering Classes are now being offered to children Jazz 6 level and above, I really recommend this classes to improve overall flexibility. It is important for children working at these higher levels to be flexible and have ease of motion through the muscles. These extra 30 minutes will be solely concentrating on improving body strength and flexibility, which is something we just don’t have enough time to cover in the normal Jazz class.

EXPRESSIONS DANCE T-SHIRTS Expressions Dance t-shirts are available and can be worn in class by older students who are Grade 6 Jazz /Tap or above & Contemporary students. The t-shirts would not be allowed to be worn in an Jazz examination.

CONTEMPORARY BEGINNERS CLASS
Aimed at students 9 years and above this will be an introductory class to Contemporary taken by our amazing Mr Harada, on a Wednesday 5.15pm – 6pm.

DANCE COMPETITIONS
This year I will be entering students into the Auckland dance competitions, if you daughter / son is interested please email Justine and I will send you further information.

UNIFORMS
Please ensure students are wearing the correct uniforms to all classes and hair is tied neatly off faces. There will be 2 uniform days held before the start of term, selling new and second hand, to ensure everyone has the correct uniform, if you know what you require please email Justine so I can make sure I have it in stock. Pink and Red ballet uniforms can be purchased from the studio all others should be purchased from ‘The Dancers Wardrobe’ in Remuera, ‘Energetics’ is the brand name.

TE TUHI
Just a polite reminder parents must fully supervise children in the foyer and café area, please do not allow children into the gallery spaces or to run around in the foyer.

MEDAL AWARDS – SUNDAY 7th JULY
Everyone is invited to watch the solo performances taking place on Sunday 7th July from 1.30pm – 6pm in the auditorium.
Children from the age of 9 years up have been busy working on solo dances which they will perform in costume, – it should

WIZARD OF OZ PERFORMANCES
Some of our older students (and some smaller lions and munchkins) will be performing a shortened version of ‘The
Wizard of Oz’ as part of the ‘Storylines Story Tour’. Students will be rehearsing during the July school holidays
and performing at the Telstra theatre on Saturday 17
th August at 12.30pm & 2pm and then again on Sunday 18th
August at the Aotea centre at 11am & 1pm.

FLASH MOB
Calling all you dancers grab a friend and come along and join in our Flash Mob at Pakuranga
Plaza on Sunday 28 July at 12pm. We want everyone to be involved – that includes Mum’s &
Dad’s. It’s time to get up and dance (even if you have never danced before). To make the event
happen we need a couple of practises so come and boogie on down with us on Monday 15th July
7pm – 8pm, Wednesday 17th July 7pm – 8pm, and Thursday 25th 7pm – 8pm.
Tell your friends as we want to make this an epic event and rock the plaza. See you there!

FUNDRAISING
It’s that time again and I know some of you can’t wait for the fudge to arrive! As in previous years it would be very
appreciated if you can take a box of fudge to sell. The fudge is delicious and also comes in a nice gift box so would make an
ideal present – that’s if you don’t eat it all first! Fudge will be handed out from Thursday 4th July, each carry box contains 8
smaller boxes which can be sold for $5 each, and therefore the cost of one carry box is $40. Money needs to be return by week
1 of term 3, all money raised goes towards our end of year concert.

ISTD EXAMS
All entries have now been submitted and I am just waiting for the ISTD to confirm exact dates which will be sometime
between August 16th – 29th September, just under 100 candidates will be taking exams this year.
Just a reminder all candidates must have the correct uniform and Ballet girls Primary level and above are required to have
ribbons on their Ballet shoes.

All candidates will be supplied with a DVD so they can practice at home.

ANNUAL SHOW
This year’s show will be on SUNDAY 1st DECEMBER 2013 at the Vodafone Events Theatre Manukau. The show will be
based on the story of The Lion, Witch & Wardrobe and will an amazing production for all the children to be involved in,
preschool included. Children will start learning their dances for the concert in Term 3, let me know if your daughter will not
be participating in the concert. Any parents that can offer assistance with costume making, props, scenery painting please
contact Justine.

CONGRATULATIONS MELISSA
Belated congratulations to Melissa Bather who won 2nd place in the Ignite Talent Competition held at Botany Downs
Secondary College for her Tap dance, not only did she win $300 prize money for herself but she also won $300 for
Expressions Dance. The money will be put towards purchasing a floating trophy which will be awarded for ‘Outstanding
Performance’

EVENING OF DANCE – CHEESE & WINE EVENING
We will be running this successful event again on Saturday 24th August 6pm , so please mark this
date in your dairies. All children Ballet 1, and above are invited to participate and perform the dances
they have been working on in class, in the auditorium at te tuhi, while parents sit back and enjoy the
performance with a glass of wine and cheese. Parents will need to purchase tickets for this event and
all money raised will go towards our ‘Lion, Witch & Wardrobe’ production. Tickets will be on sale
from the beginning of next term and cost $12.50. Tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis
with seating strictly limited to 200, you must get in quick to guarantee a seat! All performers will be
required to attend a rehearsal prior to the performance at 4pm on Saturday 24th August.
If any parents have any contacts to help us find sponsors for Cheese and Wine please contact Justine.
In previous years this event has been so popular that we have sold out of tickets so to assist with our planning, we need to
know now if you daughter / son will be performing. Please return the slip below before the end of term if you want to be
involved in this fantastic evening.

Also very exciting news is our first ever ‘DANCE CAMP’ which will be held on Motutapu Island on
Friday 12th – Sunday 14th April. For students aged 9 years and up, dance classes and workshops

would be an open class aimed at all levels from beginners to advanced.
